Why the seat matters

You can watch this from directly underneath, where the sound is overwhelming and you cannot see the shape at all, or from a hill two kilometres away where you see the whole organism and hear nothing. Both are correct answers to different questions, and no other show in this programme has such a sharp fork between them.

Every seat, ranked

Seat fit is the simulator’s own score — darkness, open horizon, historical clear-sky odds, altitude and reachability, weighted for what this show cares about. It ranks seats against each other; it is not a forecast for any night. Tap a seat for the full card.

What is actually happening

Up to a million starlings gather over a reedbed roost in the last thirty minutes of light. No bird leads. Each individual tracks roughly seven neighbours regardless of distance — topological rather than metric attention — and copies changes in heading and speed. That rule alone propagates a turn across the whole flock faster than any single bird could fly, producing the wave fronts and density shocks that read as a single dark organism folding through the air.

Other shows

Front Row is a planning simulator on a curated dataset. Every place and coordinate is real; elevation, Bortle class, horizon obstruction and cloud odds are researched estimates for the site and season — climatology and site character, not a forecast. Background skies are rendered by the simulator, not photographed. Verify real conditions and access with an authoritative local source before you travel.
